Vitex agnus castus, or chaste tree, acts directly on the pituitary gland to inhibit the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and stimulate the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH), thereby reducing estrogen, by changing the estrogen-progesterone balance in favor of progesterone, through increased levels of luteinizing hormone and mild inhibition of follicle-stimulating hormone secretion.

Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa), also known by its Anglo-Saxon name Black cohosh, may be useful in relieving various symptoms associated with menopause (from hot flashes, mental symptoms and vaginal atrophy) and has been shown in several studies to be effective and safe immediately after perimenopause, its usefulness is comparable to transdermal estradiol and is even supported by Cochrane.

Chinese Angelica (Angelica sinensis) has been traditionally used to treat menstrual disorders, especially dysmenorrhea, as its bioactive components, especially Z-Lingustilide, have been shown to inhibit uterine contractions and improve microcirculation, which justifies its antispasmodic action. It also has anti-inflammatory effects, which contribute to the relief of painful symptoms, acting as a uterine tonic and relaxant.

White Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is used in Portuguese herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory effects, especially in menstrual disorders with heavy flow.
