A direct attack by free radicals and other oxidizing agents can decrease GSH.

The homeostasis of the redox cycle of Glutathione aims to maintain levels of GSH in the way it is consumed since the quantities available through food are limited and its reduction by oxidation is easily superior to its synthesis.

As the production of free radicals exceeds the body's capacity to neutralize/eliminate them, oxidative stress occurs, being the primary function of Glutathione to decrease it.
